Located on the Atlantic coast of southern Florida, Port St. Lucie is the 8th largest city in Florida with a residing population of 179,413 residents. Since 2014, the mayor of the city is Gregory J, Oravec. This city occupies 120 square miles in St. Lucie County on Florida’s east coast, about 50 miles from West Palm Beach, and half way between Miami and Orlando.

History Of Port Saint Lucie

In the 1950’s, Port St. Lucie was a largely uninhabited land which was merely composed of a fishing camp, few farms, and scattered businesses. However, in 1958 the General Development Cooperation allotted $50 million to the city in developing an advanced community on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River. Expeditiously, land marketing, sales, and settlements followed and led to the city of Port Saint Lucie in 1961. Years later, the population boomed significantly as the city’s population drastically tripled in size between 1980 and 1990; providing the opportunity to prosper to several citizens. Today, the city has transitioned from a developing housing community to one of the most flourishing, and progressive cities in Florida.

In present day, the city attracts people for its low crime rate, diverse housing stock, and abundant open space. Nonetheless, there are distinct attractions besides the economical interests. For instance, Florida’s turnpike, a 309 miles state interstate, has tremendous shopping centers and amusement parks which attract state residents as well as tourists year round. Some of the shopping centers include: The Florida Mall, Vero Beach Outlets, and Palm Beach Outlets. The major amusement parks are Universal Resort,Walt Disney World, and Seaworld. Other than shopping and the tourist attractions, there is also the famous art museum called the Elliott Museum which features a spectra of artwork; from classic cars to trucks to bikes and boats, the museum displays it all. The city also provides the people with recreational opportunities through numerous activities such as fishing, kayaking, surfing, sailing, golf, tennis, skating, etc. The city features parks and gardens for nature lovers to explore. To name a few: Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens showcases a variety of unique flowers and plants, Savannas Preserve State Park Environmental Education Center is a 10-mile coastal marsh reserve where you can go fishing,hiking,boating and canoeing, and Veterans Park at Rivergate park that features military memorials and a ceremonial pentagon. Port St. Lucie also has the Treasure Coast Model Railroad Club to depict scenes from the railroad.

It is more efficient to travel to various destinations from the port. The city is filled with all sorts of attractions appealing to all ages. The residents of the community are delighted to say that Saint Port Lucie is a well rounded city.
